Dark lips stand out starkly on the face, and can be very disturbing. One can try to hide them by using lipstick or lip gloss, but this obviously cannot be done all the time.
What causes dark lips? Well, there are several reasons for it.
Though dark complexioned people generally inherit dark lips, several lifestyle factors also contribute, mainly excessive smoking and caffeine intake, some harsh chemicals in cosmetics, exposure to sun, and sometimes even hormonal and age-related factors.
So lets see what simple remedies we can try at home to alleviate this condition.
Add a tsp of fresh lime juice to a tsp of coconut oil.
Now keep adding granulated sugar a little at a time, mixing it well with each addition.
Add enough sugar to form a thick paste.
Apply this over the lips, gently massaging it well.
The granulated sugar acts as an exfoliant, removing the dead cells.
Use this scrub every day, and wash off with plain water.
Then take some honey and apply over the lips, leaving it overnight.
Alternatively, you may use olive oil instead of honey.
In about 2 tlbsp of milk, add 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder to make a thick paste.
Moisten your lips with water, and using a very soft brush, gently scrub the lips.
Now apply the milk and turmeric paste for a couple of minutes, and wash it off.
After drying the lips gently, apply a light layer of ghee, or clarified butter.
These measures, though simple, can prove to be very effective in giving you healthy coloured lips, so make it a practice to follow the routine every day.
Avoid smoking and drinking, and live healthy.
